St John and the City Defibrillator Project

In Edinburgh, our volunteers run the St John and the City defibrillator project.

Launched in 2016, the project has seen dozens of defibrillators placed across Edinburgh and the surrounding area, including at Edinburgh Castle, one on each of the city's trams, and many other locations across the capital.

The project works by connecting Donors with Hosts across the city.

Donors may be small or large businesses, community groups or individuals who wish to donate funds for a defibrillator and cabinet. Becoming a donor presents a good opportunity for organisations to demonstrate their commitment to the safety of their staff, people who use their services, and the general public.

Hosts are venues which agree to install the defibrillator on their premises - preferably outside, so the defibrillator can be accessed by members of the public 24/7. Ideal Hosts are venues where the local provision of Public Access Defibrillators is lacking.

All St John and the City defibrillators are registered on The Circuit, so that 999 call handlers can direct anyone responding to a cardiac arrest to their nearest accessible defibrillator.

Whenever a defibrillator is installed, free CPR training is also offered to the Host and Donor, increasing the awareness of life-saving techniques among staff and visitors.
